Professional Development

The AP21 professional development series is constructed to allow asynchronous professional development from the experts at Metiri. With over 50 years of combined professional development experience, the AP21 series provides content, activities, and assessments that are built from the core belief that teachers learn best when engaging in a Community of Practice with peers who share a context. The AP21 series is available for individual teachers, schools, teacher teams, districts, or states. There are three core outcomes to the AP21 series:

1. Foundational understanding of the research behind specific 21st Century Skills, such as Critical Thinking.

2. Understanding assessment in a 21st Century context, including developing rubrics that are reliable assessment tools.

3. Building opportunities for authentic learning, tied to the Common Core Standards and key 21st Century Skills.

Assessment Tools

AP21 leverages Metiri’s widely used rubrics for 21st Century Skills combined with rubrics that have been built out for the Common Core Standards. Already included in AP21′s growing list of assessment tools are rubrics for Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Statistics and Probability for 6th grade, and Statistics and Probability for 7th grade.

Also included in the assessment tool kit are tools to help AP21 users achieve and document inter-rater reliability within a scoring team. This tool kit provides sample student work and rubrics for scoring teams to use as they embark on the essential task of consensus when evaluating formative assessments within the new Common Core Standards.

Case Studies

A dynamic aspect to the AP21 suite of tools are the case studies. These dynamic cases build out video exemplars of units being taught, with unit plans, rubrics, sample student work, teacher reflections of teaching the unit, and actual classroom teacher blog posts about the process of preparing and teaching these model units that encompass the Common Core Standards and 21st Century Skills.
